A conversation I was having with a client last week made me realize that our generation (myself included) is wounded by thinking carbs make you fat.
I was born in 1982 and I remember in the 7th grade my stepmom going on the “fat gram” diet. It may have been weight watchers but all I remember is that she was only permitting herself a low amount of fat grams per day. I was overweight at the time so I joined her. I even remember eating “low fat” tacos from Taco Bell. 😂
This would have been the early 1990’s. Then a shift happened that decade. All of a sudden a diet that was first published in the 1970’s became very popular in the late 1990’s. You probably guessed it, The Atkins Diet. I don’t have to tell you what that diet consisted of because if you are reading this email you know.
Following the Atkins Diet came the South Beach Diet in 2003. This led to two decades of a carb conscious culture. Major brands have shifted their marketing messages and even adjusted their ingredients to cater to the “low carb” trends.
So now here we are in 2022 and we have all been brain washed to think carbs are bad. Like most culture shifting lies there is a little truth in the message which is how we get sucked in to believing it.
Eating a low carb diet will make you lose weight which is the result you want so you buy into what these diets are selling you. But is it truly what your body needs? As I write that sentence I think to myself that most people don’t care what their body needs they just want the result.
Well I am here to tell you that carbs are not bad. Carbohydrates do not make you fat. Eating too much of the wrong foods makes you fat…not carbs alone.
I want to present a new idea to you. It’s actually not new because it has been around for thousands of years but to this time we are living it is new.
First it will require you to remove this pre conceived thought the media and culture has made you believe about carbohydrates. I want you to realize that healthy carbohydrates such as fruits and vegetables are very healthy and should be included in your diet. I would even go as far as to include beans, rice and certain grains. I know I likely just shocked everyone reading this with that statement.
This email is not the place to give you the run down on how to include these foods and in what quantities. That would require a little more information about you specifically. The goal of this email is to open your eyes to what you believe about food in hopes that it will help you make better choices.
I will end here by saying don’t believe everything you hear. Especially in the weight loss/diet industry. If a diet or meal plan you are on is asking you to remove a food item that you think makes no sense you should do some more research. Or ask more questions. The best meal plan for you is the one that helps you lose body fat, gain muscle and you feel amazing all the while.
